Preparing for your Oral Exam in Professional Psychology

Presented by Dr. Jim Eliuk, R.Psych

Intended Audience

This half day workshop is designed for Students & Provisionals who are PAA Members.

Learning Objectives

The Oral exam is an important component of the journey each of us make on the road toward becoming a professional psychologist.  While the questions are listed on the CAP website & the answers or directions to the answers are provided, the process requires more than simple rote learning.  This workshop will provide a discussion of what the expectations are that will allow a provisional psychologist to successfully navigate what can be an anxiety filled event in the development & journey toward becoming a psychologist. The workshop will be interactive & will require that participants have done some initial preparation for the Oral exam required by CAP. I will use question-and-answer, discussion, & practical examples to help operationalize the different questions & answers.

Presenter

Jim Eliuk has been a Registered Psychologist in Alberta since 1987. Prior to completing his registration requirements, he had worked with children and adolescents in both inpatient settings at the University of Alberta Hospital and in outpatient settings, with Alberta Mental Health Services. Of the 12 years he was with Mental Health Services, he spent the last seven years working with the Adolescent Group Program which has evolved into Child and Adolescent Services (C.A.S.A.). After completing his Master of Education (Counselling Psychology) in 1986 and obtaining his registration in 1987, he then went on to complete his Doctorate in Educational Psychology in 1996. During the last 20 years, his clinical interests have shifted toward the field of understanding and managing chronic pain, stress management, learning to live with a chronic illness and using psychological treatment methods when dealing with physical illnesses. Besides using Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dr. Eliuk has received advanced training in Biofeedback, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Hypnosis, and in Hakomi, a body-centered therapy. Most recently he worked at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, working with adults who had experienced a spinal cord injury, closed head injury, or amputation. He has also worked part-time in private practice since becoming a registered psychologist. Currently he is working as a Clinical Supervisor in the Department of Educational Psychology, University of Alberta, where he supervises graduate students in the early stages of their psychological training.

In his private practice with North Land Family Counselling, Dr. Eliuk is providing counselling and therapy to adults dealing with trauma, stress, chronic pain or illness, depression, anxiety, and relationship concerns.
