Abstract

Current efforts to help clients with weight-related issues focus on nutrition and physical activity with the measure of success being decreased weight/BMI. The oppression of weight bias and stigma underlie many client issues with body image, eating, and self-esteem.  Our role as psychologists is unique: if someone attends counselling for weight-related issues, our role is not to change their weight.  Rather, our role is to help them develop a healthier relationship with their body (Piran, 2002), regardless of weight.

Learning Objectives
  1. Examine how weight stigma, body image, and eating issues impact clients of all ages
  2. Examine how a psychologist’s own perspective of weight, body image, and eating issues impact clients
  3. Identify age, gender, and socio-cultural factors that impact client’s weight, body image, and eating issues
  4. Examine the perceived obesity epidemic and its’ impact on therapist and client perceptions of weight and body image
  5. Examine issues arising from weight bias and stigma for different populations
  6. Identify how weight-related issues are a social justice issue that requires advocacy
  7. Examine psychologists’ role in identifying, preventing, and treating body image, weight, and eating issues in clients.
  8. Practice evidence-based approaches for weight, body image, and eating issues.
