Gaining an understanding of how colonial institutions have affected Indigenous First Nations communities, families and individuals is crucial to providing culturally-informed services.

Trainer Shelley Pompana Speaf Chief is an Indigenous Dakota Woman, knowledge keeper and elder. She is married into the Blood Reserve, known as Kainai, to Moses Spear Chief, tribal member of Kainai. Shelley understands the challenges and barriers faced by First Nations People and works tirelessly as an advocate for change. Shelley is a recipient of the CCPA Indigenous Practice Award, 2022. She is an international presenter who speaks about First Nations trauma and increasing cultural competence to work with Indigenous clients. She has presented with Bruce Perry, Sandra Paulsen and Laurel Parnell.  She is an author, who has co-authored two books: one with Sandra Paulsen on Indigenous Trauma and Dissociation and one with Moses called Eagle Wings Flapping, on how Beaver learns to handle big emotions.
