Nature-Assisted Therapy: Theory and Applications Among Individuals who are Terminally Ill- 3CE

Abstract

In this presentation I will provide an introduction to nature-assisted therapy including an overview of evidence supporting the use of nature as a co-therapist, nature-based interventions, mindfulness in nature, and important client and ethical considerations. I will discuss human connection to nature from an evolutionary perspective and delve into the impacts of nature exposure on emotion regulation and neurophysiology. The applications of nature-assisted therapy are broad: I will discuss the evidence supporting utility of nature-assisted therapy among a wide range of populations with a special focus on individuals diagnosed with terminal illness.

Intended Audience

Mental health care practitioners who are interested in learning about nature-assisted therapy.

Presenter

Dr. Lisa Smithson

Dr. Lisa Smithson is a Registered Psychologist and an Associate Lecturer at the University of Alberta. Dr. Smithson completed her Master of Science in Psychology at the University of Alberta in 2011 and her PhD in Psychology at the University of Alberta in 2014. At the University of Alberta Lisa teaches courses with a focus on animal and nature-assisted therapy, interpersonal relationships, psychological development, psychopathology, and nonverbal communication. Dr. Smithson has a private clinical practice dedicated to helping clients who are terminally ill, experiencing grief, and navigating major life transitions. Alongside animal and nature-assisted therapy, her therapeutic approach draws on elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Client-centered therapy, Narrative therapy, and Existential therapy. During her spare time, Lisa enjoys going on nature walks with her children, painting, reading, and camping with her family.

Cancellation and Refunds

Cancellation and refunds may be applied for by email or phone call to the PAA Continuing Professional Development Officer.  Cancellations received fourteen (14) days prior to the Continuing Professional Development activity will receive a full refund of the registration fee, less a $35.00 + GST processing fee. PAA reserves the right to cancel any activity, in which case a full refund of the registration fee will be provided.

Continuing Education Credits

The Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA) is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) to offer Continuing Education (CE) for psychologists. This workshop is offered for three (3.0) hours of CE Credit. Full attendance at the workshop is required to receive Continuing Education Credits. Partial credit will not be awarded, and late arrivals or early departure will preclude awarding of Continuing Education Credits. PAA maintains responsibility for the program.
