PAA recognizes companies, psychologists, and other individuals through a series of awards on an annual basis.
As we embark on a new year, PAA is excited to announce the opening of our Awards Program for new nominations. We invite you to shine a light on deserving nominees,so we can celebrate their remarkable contributions to the field of psychology in Alberta.
We have six Lifetime Achievement & Excellence Awards and three Research Awards available each year, with links to the applications in the respective fields below.
Help us acknowledge our own exemplars, honouring those who shape our profession in such meaningful ways.
The nominations for 2025 Open on January 6th, 2025 and close April 30th.
This award is extended to qualifying PAA members to celebrate excellent work being conducted in the field of psychology. This non-monetary award is designed to acknowledge significant achievement or contributions over the previous two-year period in any of the following categories – advocacy, clinical/counselling, school/educational, developmental, social, industrial/organizational, and research.
2024 Psychologist of the Year Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-Psychologist-of-the-Year
This award is presented to a psychologist or non-psychologist for their exceptional contribution to portraying psychological knowledge to the public through the media of radio, television, print or electronic communications. The media contribution must have taken place within the two years immediately preceding the submission date of the nomination.
2024 John G. Paterson Media Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-JohnGPatersonMedia
This award is presented to qualifying PAA members for outstanding career achievements in, or contributions to, the field of psychology. This award celebrates a long-time enduring contribution to the field of psychology, either within the province of Alberta or in the broader national and international domains.
2024 Pettifor Lifetime Achievement Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-PettiforLifetimeAchievement
This award is presented to a psychologist or non-psychologist in recognition of important work in advancing psychological health, well-being, and quality of life for Albertans through service to the community or advocacy.
2024 Juanita Chambers Excellence in Community Service Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-JuanitaChambersExcellenceCommunityService
This award is presented to a registered psychologist whose performance in supervising one or more individuals in any practice area is deemed exemplary during the previous two-year period.
This award is for applied and/or practical supervision of clinical/counseling internship, practicum, or provisional psychologists.
2024 Excellence in Clinical Supervision Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-ExcellenceClinicalSupervision
This award is presented to a psychologist or non-psychologist who demonstrates “outstanding” teaching of psychology in an Alberta Government-approved/authorized institution for post-secondary education.
This award covers academic and research supervision.
2024 Excellence in Teaching Psychology Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-ExcellenceInTeachingPsychology
Undergraduate students are invited to submit an abstract of the research that has been completed and evaluated during the past two years and an endorsement letter from the supervisor. This is a monetary award of $150.00.
2025 Undergraduate Thesis Research Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-UndergraduateThesisResearch
Masters-level students are invited to submit an abstract of their current research which has been completed and defended during the past two years with two letters of support from supervisors. This is a monetary award of $300.00.
2025 Masters’ Thesis Research Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-MastersThesisResearch
Doctoral-level students are invited to submit an abstract of their dissertation research completed and defended during the past year alongside two letters of support, one from a supervisor and one from a dissertation committee member. This is a monetary award of $300.00.
2025 Doctoral Dissertation Research Award Nomination Form – PAA_Awards_2025-DoctoralDissertationResearch
This award was presented for the first time at the Calgary Youth Science Fair in 2004 and for the first time at the Edmonton Regional Science Fair in 2005. In 2006, the award was presented for the first time at the Central Alberta Science Fair in Red Deer. The award is given to the best senior project demonstrating insight into the psychological study of behaviour, emotion, and/or cognition. If no senior project is suitable, the prize may be awarded to an appropriate intermediate or elementary project at the discretion of the judging committee.
PAA will be continuing its support in presenting an award at all three science fairs when a suitable project is submitted. There is no call for nominations for these awards; the awards are presented based on the judging committee at the youth science fairs.

The 2021 awards were presented at the PAA Welcome to the Profession & Awards Virtual Event on Friday, September 10, 2021. You can view our event through our YouTube Channel.
The 2020 awards were presented at the PAA Welcome to the Profession & Awards Virtual Event on Friday, October 2, 2020.
The 2019 awards were presented at the PAA Welcome to the Profession & Awards Banquet on September 20, 2019, at the Citadel Theater in Edmonton.
