Abstract

Assessment and counselling are integral components of the psychotherapy process. Assessment occurs in the initial stages and is often ongoing to inform the psychotherapy process. Topics for this workshop will include mental status examinations, psychometrics, screening measures, and limitations of self-report. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a broader understanding of general assessments for psychotherapists.

Intended Audience

This workshop would be suitable for applied graduate students or practicing psychotherapists. PAA’s position statement on psychotherapy is that mental health counselling and psychotherapy should only be provided by regulated health professionals with at least a master’s degree in psychology, counselling, psychotherapy, social work (in clinical practice), or by a psychiatrist.

Learning Objectives

  • To learn the components of general mental health assessments.
  • To understand how principles of psychological assessment may be incorporated into existing psychotherapy practice.

Presenter

Jamie Dyce, Ph.D.

Jamie A. Dyce, PhD is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Concordia University of Edmonton and has been employed there since 1997. In his capacity as professor, he has taught hundreds of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His areas of specialty are personality disorders, psychometric theory and personality assessment. Dr. Dyce has been a registered psychologist in the province of Alberta since 1998. His area of specialty is general psychological assessment.
Format and Schedule

The format for the presentation will largely be a lecture. Topics for the program will include:

  • History of Psychological Assessment
  • Collecting Data and Errors
  • The Interview 
  • Mental Status Examinations
  • Psychometrics
  • Screening Measures
  • Limitations of Self-report
  • Military Psychological Reports
Cancellation and Refunds

Cancellation and refunds may be applied for by email or phone call to the PAA. Cancellations received fourteen (14) days prior to the Continuing Professional Development activity will receive a full refund of the registration fee, less a $35.00 + GST processing fee. PAA reserves the right to cancel any activity, in which case a full refund of the registration fee will be provided.

Continuing Education Credits

The Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA) is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) to offer Continuing Education (CE) for psychologists. This workshop is offered for six (6.0) hours of CE Credit. Full attendance at the workshop is required to receive Continuing Education Credits. Partial credit will not be awarded, and late arrivals or early departure will preclude awarding of Continuing Education Credits. PAA maintains responsibility for the program.
