A curriculum vitae (CV), statement of intent, transcript(s), and reference letters are all required documents that applicants need to have when applying to graduate programs. At this stage in the application timeline, it is important to update your curriculum vitae (CV) and finish your statement of intent.
What is a CV? A CV is a detailed document that provides an in-depth look at your career, including your education, awards, work experience, volunteer experience, research, publications, and other accomplishments. It is typically longer than a resume, often spanning several pages. A CV is different than a resume, which is often a shorter, more concise summary of your skills, qualifications, and relevant work experience.
A strong CV is essential when applying to graduate schools because it highlights your readiness for advanced study. It allows you to showcase your qualifications, helping you stand out from other applicants. A polished CV reflects professionalism and attention to detail, making a strong first impression with admissions committees and demonstrating that you’re a strong fit for the program. What is a Letter of Intent? A letter of intent, sometimes called a statement of intent, is a short essay that is intended to provide admissions committees a better understanding of applicants applying to their programs. A letter of intent usually includes an applicant’s interest in a specific psychology program, expands on relevant past academic/professional experiences, and explains long-term career goals.
A letter of intent is a vital piece of your graduate application. This is the only section that allows an applicant to directly speak to their own experiences, motivations, and plans. It is important to take your time and draft more than one version of this letter. Concisely summarizing your motivation for attending a program, relevant experience, and career goals can be challenging so we recommend getting an early start on this letter, so you have lots of time to reflect and edit before submitting.
Different programs will have different requirements for the content in a letter of intent and the maximum length. We recommend writing a separate letter of intent for each program application. See the below resources to find great tips on writing your letter of intent.
