Selecting a supervisor is one of the most important decisions you will make in a thesis-based clinical or counselling psychology graduate program. This individual will guide you throughout your research and professional development, often over several years. It is essential to ensure that your interests, whether clinical or research-focused, align with theirs. Take the time to explore their work and values—do their clinical or research approaches resonate with yours? Will your personalities and working styles mesh? Doing thorough research now will set the foundation for a successful, collaborative relationship that supports your growth and goals.
Importantly, when identifying prospective supervisors, make sure that they are accepting new students for the term you are applying for.
