Preparing for the LEAP and EPPP

After registering as Provisional Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists, Provisional psychologists must complete the following to fully register as a psychologist in Alberta:

  • 1600 hours of supervised and evaluated practice
  • The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) – Part 1 Knowledge
  • The jurisprudence and ethics examination (Law and Ethics for Alberta Psychologists (LEAP))
  • Mandatory training on Preventing and Addressing Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct
  • CAP’s Continuing Competence Program (after their first practice permit renewal, not when they initially register)
  • Annual renewal of a practice permit

Provisional psychologists are required to attempt the jurisprudence and ethics examination (Law and Ethics for Alberta Psychologists (LEAP)) within 6 months of their provisional status being granted. The LEAP examination is an entrance to practice requirement that assesses a psychologist’s knowledge of Alberta jurisprudence and ethical psychological practice. This test was developed and administered by CAP. It is “open book” and consists of two parts: a self-study guide and an online examination. Candidates can pay, register, and complete the examination through the MyCAP Login. For more information, please review the LEAP Self Study Guide, LEAP Handbook, and the LEAP FAQ created by CAP.

The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) can be taken at any time after an applicant becomes a provisional psychologist. However, CAP encourages provisional psychologists to take the EPPP early in the registration process. This test assesses foundational knowledge and is currently used by most psychological licensing jurisdictions across North America. It was developed and is administered by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). ASPPB has developed a second part of the EPPP (Part 2 – Skills) which is not currently a registration requirement of CAP. The CAP Council has announced that the EPPP (Part 2 – Skills) will be introduced as a registration requirement starting January 1, 2026.

The EPPP (Part 1 – Knowledge) is a multiple-choice computerized examination that assesses:

  • general knowledge of psychology, intervention, and assessment
  • grasp of theories in areas such as cognition, affect, and development,
  • awareness of key research topics and factors impacting psychological functioning.

The Knowledge portion of the EPPP covers eight content areas:

  1. Biological bases of behavior
  2. Cognitive-affective bases of behavior
  3. Social and cultural bases of behavior
  4. Growth and lifespan development
  5. Assessment and diagnosis
  6. Treatment, intervention, prevention and supervision
  7. Research methods and statistics
  8. Ethical, legal, and professional issues

The passing score for EPPP (Part 1 – Knowledge) is 500/800 (70%). As of January 1, 2023, two policies took effect that limit the number of EPPP attempts each applicant can take. A provisional psychologist may only attempt the EPPP a maximum of three times. When there are extenuating circumstances, CAP may, in its sole discretion, permit a provisional psychologist to attempt the EPPP one additional time. For more information about the examinations, accommodations, and CAP’s policy, visit CAP’s website.

To register for the EPPP (Part 1 – Knowledge), login to the MyCAP Login and submit your EPPP application. Please note that applications are NOT accepted in the last four months of your five-year term as a provisional psychologist because this exam must be completed at least one month before status as a provisional psychologist expires. It can take CAP up to 4 weeks from the date they receive the application to send an email confirming eligibility to apply for the EPPP exam with ASPPB. Information about examination and registration costs can be found in CAP’s fee schedule.
