Bio for Referral Service: I am a PhD Psychologist who graduated from the University of Alberta. I have been truly fortunate to spend the past 20 years working in private practice with a wide range of clients. Almost half of my practice has been committed to working with children and adolescents who have been victims of trauma. For numerous years, most of the children that I saw for trauma counselling were referred by the Zebra Child & Adolescent Protection Center in Edmonton and the pediatricians and staff at the Child and Adolescent Protection Center. I continue to see children, adolescents, and adults who have been victims of sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse. I see this same clientele for a wide variety of other issues such as anxiety, depression, attachment issues, emotional regulation, bullying, school issues, adjusting to separation and loss, sexual and gender issues, and those clients who are on the autism spectrum. Throughout my career, I have and continue to work with veterans and those individuals who are actively serving in our military. Also, I continue to work with RCMP officers and those who are considered first responders. I believe that working in the field of counselling involves utilizing numerous techniques drawing from various therapy modalities that best fit each client’s unique needs and personalities. Thus, I utilize numerous modalities of therapy from play and art to solution focused, cognitive behavioral, narrative, and psycho educational. Also, I am certified in Somatic Experiencing therapy. Also, I believe despite how dark the issues with which we might be facing, there are moments, actually many moments for laughter. I believe a sense of humor is essential in the work that we do. However, despite what brings a child or adult to therapy, it is the relationship that will continue to bring them back to the process. During my career I have taught classes and workshops in trauma and attachment. Also, I have supervised both Master’s and Ph.D. level students at the University of Alberta. Additionally, I had the privilege early in my career to travel and volunteer in the Philippines, at the Department of Health, Women, & Children Protection Center at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. I made numerous trips there where I worked with a translator doing trauma therapy with the children. Also, consulting with other psychologists and medical physicians on the running of the Center. I was also fortunate to work with a team of experts (psychologists and psychiatrists) in the first three-year training program for front line workers in understanding and aiding clients in processing trauma issues. As well, I had the opportunity to be the Keynote speaker at the first International Conference on Children and Trauma. Despite where I have traveled, the one common denominator that continues to allow me to do this work which I believe is truly a privilege and honor is you the client being willing to take the risk to be in this unique therapeutic relationship.
